Want Sexy, Easy Hair? Get Disheveled

beauty & style:  article  Dotted Line
UNDONE UPDO
1/ Blow-dry your hair straight, then spray dry shampoo onto the roots and ends of your hair, massaging it in to create volume and texture.

2/ Gather your hair at the nape of your neck, then twist it up toward the top of your head (in a French twist). Anchor it with one or two small claw clips.

3/ If you have loose ends at the top of your twist, fold them down and tuck them in along the twist. Secure with bobby pins.

4/ Use your fingers to rustle the front of your hair so that random face-framing pieces fall loose. You can also pull out longer bangs in the front (if you have them) for a more undone look. Mist all over with medium-hold hair spray to ensure the twist stays put.

MESSY BOB
1/ Let hair air-dry, then make a center part. Mist dry shampoo through your hair from roots to ends to create a piecey look.

2/ Loosely gather your hair at the nape of your neck, then roll and tuck your ends underneath the rest of your hair to create a faux bob. Secure the rolled-under section with randomly spaced bobby pins or small claw clips.

3/ Pull a few random two-inch face-framing sections loose and use a one-inch-barrel curling iron to tousle the ends. Spritz with medium-hold hair spray.

BED-HEAD TWIST
1/ Spray dry shampoo onto your roots for added texture, then make a center part. Back-comb the roots at your crown for volume.

2/ Spiral the length of your hair into a tight twist, allowing the hair at your crown to pouf up over the top of your twist.

3/ Pull out a few face-framing pieces as well as some random sections of hair two inches back from your hairline. Doing this eliminates the line of demarcation between the pieces you've released from the style and the face-framing sections in the front, creating a more unkempt look.

4/ Use a one-inch curling iron to wave the sections you've pulled loose.

5/ Spritz the back and crown of your head with medium-hold hair spray, but avoid the front so that the style will have some movement and softness.

Ummm, Can We Start Wearing Hats Again?

Oh how I love this picture. It makes me want to take a time machine back to the 40s, perhaps the 50s, so I can wear cute little dresses and hats like this without looking like a dork. Maybe I should just move to England and attend weddings.

With "Mad Men" raging, maybe people will forget the latest 80s trend and start hitting the streets of NY in hats like these. I much prefer them to jeggings. My great wish is that a group of girls at every high school in the US will adopt the hat trend for their Homecoming dances, there's certainly no shortage of them in vintage dress shops across the country. I've tried on my share.

This picture reminds me of my dad's high school yearbooks from that era and everyone just looked so darn adorable, like they all hung out at sock hops and drank root beer floats. There was something so pure about that time before the raging 60s and 70s.

Dita Von Teese & Her Red Lipsticks of Choice

I follow Dita Von Teese on Twitter because my best friend is good friends with her ex-costumer and I think she has amazing matte, red lips. On Twitter, she frequently spills her beauty secrets so I thought it would be fun to share her favorite red lipstick shades (singer Gwen Stefani also loves the two M.A.C. shades listed here). Full disclosure: Von Teese is a M.A.C. Viva Glam representative:

Russian Red by M.A.C. is a favorite of Von Teese's and just so happens to be the red lipstick Madonna wore in the 90s when she did her Blonde Ambition tour. It's a rich, matte color that will stay on your lips for hours longer than creamy lipsticks. She talked about it on SFGate.com in 2007 (read the interview): "I wear the lipstick on my non-red-lipstick days, or when I want to be incognito at yoga class."

M.A.C.'s Ruby Woo is another favorite. You can still get it online or at M.A.C. stores. Like Russian Red, this matte lipstick will stay on your lips for hours. To keep it from getting too dry, apply gloss over it.

Guerlain's KissKiss Exces de Rouge is pricier, but is a perfect red for women with pale skin and pink undertones.
